Weapons and Firearms
For most of his life, Bruce Gunn was an avid hunter. While his daughter, Shannon Gunn Emery, does not hunt, she is proud to have her Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for both non-restricted and restricted firearms. Gunn Law Group is supportive of lawful and responsible gun ownership.
Weapons and Firearms Defence Lawyers
The criminal laws surrounding the use of firearms or other weapons are constantly evolving. The rules surrounding gun ownership can be tricky. For instance, did you know that it is an offence to not renew your PAL if you own firearms? The general trend is towards making the penalties for any offences where firearms were involved much more severe. While some clients face firearms-related offences such as unsafe storage or careless use of a firearm, others are charged with offences like breaking and entering or assault where the presence of a firearm may be an aggravating factor.
What will constitute a weapon in cases of assault can also vary widely. For example, in R. v Thurasingam, 2015 ONSC 5768 a purse was considered a weapon. In R. c. Giwa, 2019 QCCQ 633, it was a pillow. The weapon Mr. Belleau was alleged to have used in R. v. Belleau, 2021 ONSC 6977 was hot chocolate. Often the weapon alleged was a vehicle. Although some of these cases may seem humourous, the consequences for the client, if found guilty, are anything but.
